Jewelcrafting also gives you the prospecting skill witch allows you to pull gems out of piles of ore. There are many quests for jewlcrafting such as Gem Perfection, which rewards you with the ability to turn uncommon gems into perfect gems.
Some of the high end epic items include Coronet of Verdant Flame and The Frozen Eye. The best accompanying skill is mining since you have a chance to mine up gems as well as prospect mined ore.
